About Living Wholehearted

We help leaders live with integrity in their homes, at work, and in their communities.

-Jeff and Terra Mattson

LEADERSHIP MATTERS. INTEGRITY MATTERS.

Living Wholehearted is a trusted resource for leaders, their families, and those they lead.

Many people ask how counseling, leadership coaching, and organizational development all go together. It’s simple. Though we all try to compartmentalize our lives, we were never meant to live that way. Attempting to segregate our heart from our mind, or our work from our home, or our pain from our story, impacts all of our relationships, with ourselves, God, and others. Combining the disciplines of counseling, coaching, and organizational development makes for a holistic approach that is rarely offered. Our clinical team of counselors help those who are ready to embrace their pain and walk towards wholeness. Our executive coaches and organizational leadership team come alongside businesses and organizational leaders who not only want to thrive at work and in life, but help their people do so as well. Often this means helping leaders unravel the complexities of relationships within their particular disciplines. Knowing how your story and hard-wiring are impacting your leadership is key.

Living Wholehearted was formed to help leaders thrive for the greater good of all.

When leaders LIVE and LEAD with integrity, everyone in their wake benefits; when they don’t, everyone in their wake pays. It’s just a matter of time.

What if we all took time to do the work needed to live integrated lives for our families, work places, and our communities?

What if.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN…

Founders, Jeff & Terra Mattson are a husband and wife team with over 20 years of experience working in the helping and leadership development fields. They been passionate about living lives of integrity, healing, and authenticity even before they met.

In 1998, Jeff spotted Terra at a Tully’s coffee shop on Queen Anne in Seattle, WA. Their romance started soon after and they have been together ever since. (Learn more about their story in episode 65 & 66 of the Living Wholehearted Podcast.) After four years of dating, they married in the summer of 2001. They were a part of the dot-com boom in Seattle and soon experienced the aftermath of 911. Their undergraduate years at Seattle Pacific University honed their skills and passion for leadership and relationships under Psychologists and relationship experts Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott, Theologians Drs. Tim & Kerry Dearborn and Dr. Rick Steele, as well as attorney and change-agent, Dr. Skip Lee, but their vision of doing something together wasn’t birthed until 2008 when one night they were brushing their teeth and talking about getting through the economic downturn. In 2011, Terra merged her private counseling practice with Jeff’s organizational leadership training and officially opened the doors of Living Wholehearted in Tualatin, OR. They opened their first Lodge & Retreat in Sherwood, OR in 2012.

Along the way, they have received incredible mentorship from a wide variety of leaders: Former CEO & Executive Director of the Charitable Murdock Trust Dr. Steve Moore, Bruce McNicol of Trueface Ministries, Dr. Michelle Watson-Canfield of the Abba Project, Dr. Ken Canfield of the National Center for Fathering, and of course, their own Pastor and his wife, Bill & Kathy Towne. Together, Jeff & Terra have over 20 years of experience in the helping professions and leadership development.

Jeff holds a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington and has decades of experience as a leader in start-up companies, family businesses, and non-profit organizations including universities and ministry settings. Since 2011, he has worked with business and organizational leaders to develop their potential and solve the people-issues that keep them up at night!  He is master-level certified in the Core Values Index (CVI) and a certified facilitator of Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott’s SYMBIS program (Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts).  Some of his organizational development clients include TriMet, ASSIST International, Bridgewell Resources, Subway, Stoel Rives Law Firm, The Dentist Off Main, Door to Grace, Aldrich Advisors, and Rolling Hills Community Church.

Terra holds a master’s degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from George Fox University in Portland, Oregon. She is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor and now works as an executive and clinical coach. For the last eighteen years, she has run a thriving private practice while writing and presenting to women, couples, and leaders in various settings including the American Association of Christian Counselors World Conference (2009, 2011, 2017, 2021, 2023). She is the founding Clinical Director for Living Wholehearted Counseling and has served as an adjunct professor with George Fox University’s Graduate Counseling Department. She has previous experience in community mental health, human resources, entrepreneurship, and pastoral/church ministries. She is the author of Courageous: Being Daughter Rooted in Grace (David C. Cook, 2020) and the visionary for the Courageous Gathering, a virtual conference-on-the-go resourcing women for the issues of today.

They have pioneered in many spaces together, including a a global movement called Courageous Girls, an online resource to help moms walk with their daughters at every stage of their growing years. In 2020, they had the privilege of co-authoring Shrinking the Integrity Gap: Between What Leaders Preach and Live with David C. Cook. They are the co-hosts of the Living Wholehearted Podcast and run the Living Wholehearted Lodge and Retreat. They currently partner with Christian Parenting, reaching over a million parents around the globe, to produce the Dear Mattsons parenting advice series and Raising Confident Daughter Courses. Everything they do helps holds to their goal of living what they preach as they teach, speak, write, and lead together.

Jeff & Terra are raising their two teen daughters outside Portland, Oregon on a few acres with two golden retrievers, Mr. Bo Jangles & Chief. In their spare time, they love adventures in the PNW, whether it’s fly-fishing, camping, or an outdoor movie under the stars. Jeff is a singer/songwriter and lover of all things college football (Go Ducks!). Terra enjoys painting with her youngest daughter or reading a book alongside with her oldest. She still loves deep conversations with an oat chai latte (shout out to my dairy-free friends!) and long walks on the Oregon coast. Some of their favorite authors and thinkers include Bob Dylan, Henri Nouwen, Dietrich Bonheoffer, Dr. Curt Thompson, and of course, C.S. Lewis.

Sponsor a Leader

A common question we get: Why are there so many leaders who fall? We wish there was a simple answer to that question. Our most short and to-the-point answer is that most leaders are not given the chance to do their inner work before being given the enormous responsibility to care for the mission and the staff they lead. If you have the desire to make a ripple effect in the lives of non-profit and ministry leaders who often lack the resources to pay for quality professional resources that help them thrive as leaders, this is the place. 100% of all tax-deductible donations through our non-profit partner, The National Association for Family Ministries (NAFM), goes toward scholarships for non-profit and ministry leaders who cannot afford to go through our cohorts, counseling, or coaching without additional assistance.
