Nancy Salisbury, therapist, counseling

Spending 30 years as a physician, I am keenly aware that staying healthy involves so many dimensions. I have delivered children, performed operations, managed hormones, and a variety of women’s health issues.

Over the course of my practice, I have seen an uptick in the stress people carry and the medications they are taking. My desire has been to have the time to spend with people to help them find a healthy path which suits them; not rush through consultations. I want to hear people and journey with them towards health in a meaningful way, holistically. Being awake and aware of mental health and healthy systems is part of this. I decided to pivot, pursuing a degree in counseling to enhance my skill set and slow down and listen. In my capacity as a counselor, I will be focusing on healing hearts and minds rather than physical bodies and prescribing medication.

MY PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH

Asking for help can be frightening and the first step can feel hard.

I am here to welcome you where you are and support you. I have great faith in the power of human resilience, as I have witnessed in over 30 years of medical practice. I want to utilize all I have gleaned from the practice of medicine, and my own life, helping people flourish in their own beautiful and complicated lives.

I chose Marriage and Family Counseling because this perspective sees people as part of a bigger system; their life, families, work, and community. My work as a marriage and family therapy student intern is grounded within research and theory, it supports the notion of hope and resiliency. One of the theories I employ is emotion-based which creates connections through the language of feelings. I am also a great believer that we have the power and choice to create the narrative or story of our lives, with the proper guidance and support. Counseling is a way to have an advocate to explore complicated, confusing issues, or the simple feeling of being stuck.

Therapy does not have to be scary; it can be a beautiful journey into the unknown with a kind, compassionate ally. It would be my privilege to help you or your loved ones on this journey. My emphasis as a counselor is with individuals, couple or family issues, and children who are adolescent age and older. Working with the entire system you live in, resonates with me. I am trained in issues including trauma, family strife, life transitions, fertility, menopause, aging, terminal illness, grief, anxiety, depression, spiritual confusion, intimacy issues, cultural conflict, divorce, and blended families.
