Philosophy and Approach

I understand the coaching process to be a holistic journey to discovering who you are and learning to live within your lane. I am a trusted guide to connecting clinical research, biblical truths and relational wisdom so that leaders live out healthy relationships in every area of their life.
After two decades of working with men, women, couples, teens, children, and families in my counseling practice, I have transitioned to only see executive coaching clients where I can integrate leadership development and vision while using my trauma-informed expertise. Working specifically with high-capacity leaders for two decades (and being one myself!), I understand the complexity and unique challenges leaders face.
Though we may spend some time on the concerns that brought you into coaching, we will also look at the nature of your relationships. As a Marriage & Family Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor, and Executive Coach, I believe that many of our issues are deeply rooted in the complexity of relational issues that often started in our families-of-origin. We will look at your past in order to gain better clarity of patterns in the present, with the hope of changing the future. Though my years in counseling will inform my role as a coach, the goal of coaching is to help you move forward in a more holistic way. There will be careful consideration of your lifestyle, choices, beliefs, and cultural influences. I approach all issues from the psychological, physiological, relational and spiritual aspects of your life. I also believe that you are made in the image of God and are therefore, uniquely valuable. Coaching is a safe, respectful experience and careful consideration will be given to you and your unique journey.
Formal Education and Training:

I hold a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from George Fox University in Portland, Oregon. I hold a Bachelors of Psychology and a Bachelors of Educational Ministry from Seattle Pacific University in Seattle, Washington, as well as a certificate in Marriage and Family Studies from Focus on the Family Institute. Major graduate coursework has included Human Growth and Development, Marital Therapy, Family Therapy, Play & Sand Tray Therapy, Sexual Abuse and Trauma Treatment, Human Sexuality & Sexual Intimacy, Psychopathology, Group Counseling, Substance Abuse, Ethics, Organizational Leadership, Spiritual Formation and Spiritual Integration.

I love to learn and have been trained in a wide variety of helpful tools, including trauma-informed therapies like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I am also trained in well known therapies like Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT), Imago Therapy, Gottman Marriage Therapies, SYMBIS, Core Values Index, sex-addiction and sexual betrayal recovery.  In addition to continuing education, I am committed to seeking consultation and supervision in my practice as needed. I have been a part of the TrueFace Ministries Leadership Cohorts for Consultants. I have had the privilege of sitting under some of the greatest experts in our fields including Drs. Les & Leslie Parrott, Drs. John & Julie Gottman, Dr. Sue Johnson, Dr. John Townsend, Dr. Henry Cloud, Dr. Van Der Kolk, Dr. Daniel Sweeney, Dr. Bruce McNicol, Bill Thralls, Dr. Steve Moore, and more.

Other Experience:

My unique blend of disciplines has led me to start two organizations alongside my husband, Jeff Mattson. As the founding Clinical Director of our professional counseling team and in my present role as an Executive Coach for our Wholehearted Leadership Cohorts, I have experience as a professional counselor, entrepreneur, supervisor, executive coach, consultant, pastoral counselor, adjunct professor, podcastor, and trainer in the following settings: private practice, community mental health, County Corrections, George Fox University, non-profit organizations, for-profit executive teams, and pastoral ministries in the church setting.

As co-founder of Living Wholehearted and the global movement, Courageous Girls, an online curriculum to help moms walk with their growing daughters in every step of their growing years, my unique blend of disciplines and expertise helps any leader move toward a desired wholeness, regardless of your past and your present. I have published over 100 lessons at www.mycourageousgirls.com, my first book Courageous: Being Daughters Rooted in Grace, and co-authored Shrinking the Integrity Gap: Between What Leaders Preach and Live. I have the privilege of writing, speaking, and training in various settings, including the American Association for Christian Counselors World Conference, Ministry Spark, and the Murdock Trust Foundation.

You can also listen and subscribe to the Living Wholehearted Podcast where I co-host a weekly podcast addressing the needs of leaders in the work, home, and community.

Licensure & Certification:

I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, LMFT, (License # T0733), a Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC, (License #C2416) in the state of Oregon, and a Supervisor for clinicians seeking licensure in the state of Oregon. To maintain my licenses, I am required to participate in ongoing continuing education every year, taking classes dealing with subjects relevant to my clients.

Fees and Other:

50-minute sessions are $225. Occasionally, 80-minute sessions may be requested at a fee of $340. I also do day intensives for $1500/day.

Payment is made upfront on a weekly or monthly basis via cash, check, or credit card. You may investigate if your insurance covers out-of-network, but generally coaching is covered by your organization. If my services are covered by your health insurance, I will be happy to provide a receipt for service so that you may be reimbursed directly.

All coaching sessions will be virtual unless otherwise discussed. Organizational Teams, Vision Retreats, and Couple’s Intensives are available upon request. Please talk with Jeff or Terra Mattson if you are interested in these options. We often utilize the Living Wholehearted Lodge and Retreat for more enrichment opportunities.
