Philosophy and Approach
I understand the counseling process to be a journey of hope and one that can either be proactive or responsive to the trials of life. I desire to come alongside you in this journey, working with you to set goals and facilitate change. Though we may spend some time on the concerns that brought you into counseling, we will also look at the nature of your relationships. As a Marriage & Family Therapist, I believe that many of our issues are deeply rooted in the complexity of relational issues. This includes looking into the past in order to influence patterns in the present, with the hope of changing the future. There will also be careful consideration of your lifestyle, choices, beliefs, and cultural influences. As a Christian counselor, I approach issues from a holistic perspective, keeping in mind the psychological, physiological, relational and spiritual aspects of your life. I also believe that you are made in the image of God and are therefore, uniquely valuable. Therapy is a safe, respectful experience and careful consideration will be given to you and your unique journey.
Formal Education and Training:
I hold a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from George Fox University in Portland, Oregon. I hold a Bachelors of Psychology and a Bachelors of Educational Ministry from Seattle Pacific University in Seattle, Washington, as well as a certificate in Marriage and Family Studies from Focus on the Family Institute. Major graduate coursework has included Human Growth and Development, Marital Therapy, Family Therapy, Play & Sand Tray Therapy, Sexual Abuse and Trauma Treatment, Human Sexuality & Sexual Intimacy, Psychopathology, Group Counseling, Substance Abuse, Ethics, and Spiritual Integration.
My experience includes counseling, supervision and training in the following settings: private practice, community mental health, Washington County Corrections, Associate Professorship at George Fox University, and pastoral counseling in the church setting. I have primarily worked with couples, women, families, teens and children.
Licensure & Certification:
I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, LMFT, (License # T0733), a Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC, (License #C2416) in the state of Oregon, and a Supervisor for clinicians seeking licenses in the state of Oregon. To maintain my licenses, I am required to participate in ongoing continuing education, taking classes dealing with subjects relevant to this profession. In addition to continuing education, I am committed to seeking consultation and supervision in my practice as needed. I am a member of the American Association of Marriage & Family Therapists and the American Association of Christian Counselors.
