Philosophy & Approach to Counseling

I was drawn into the profession of therapy from an ardent belief that each person’s story is beautifully complex and worthy of being heard and valued.  My desire as a counselor is that you find a safe, compassionate space to land, process, and move forward. I believe it’s important to approach you and your story holistically, taking your specific emotional, physiological, psychological, social, and spiritual factors into account. I lean into a theoretical lens that emphasizes the significance of experiences over the continuum of your life story. During our sessions, we may discuss early developmental milestones and family structures as well as lifestyle, cultural, and social factors impacting your life. I believe it important to utilize a variety of evidence-based resources and tools along with nuanced problem solving and creativity to best meet your unique needs.  As such, I may pull from such theories and interventions as CBT, narrative, attachment, neurobiology, and mindfulness techniques. I also feel that creativity can be utilized in the therapy room and may bring in sand tray work and other creative intervention as a way to meet you therapeutically. In our work together, my hope is that you feel seen, respected, and valued as we journey together towards health.

In my work with children, I have training in Child-Centered Play Therapy. This modality is an evidenced-based person-centered approach that utilizes the child’s natural language of play to process through the dynamics of their life. In our time together, I provide space for your child to be seen, heard, and understood as they process and move towards healing. Through the work of play, I place great importance on building self-esteem, behavioral regulation, and expanding their view of self and others. When working with adolescents, I prioritize rapport building. There are significant neurobiological, physical, social, and emotional changes happening in these years and I desire to provide a safe space to process these important developmental factors and be a steady presence in years that can often feel destabilizing. It is a privilege to not only walk beside children and adolescents, but also you as the parent! This is important work and I do not take it lightly that you entrust your child with me. I am here to support you as well by providing tools, resources, and encouragement in your parenting journey.

FORMAL EDUCATION & TRAINING

I am currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Clinical Counseling from Western Seminary located in Portland, OR.  I am receiving training in various areas, including Human Life Span Development, Legal and Ethical Issues, Psychopathology, Suicide Prevention, Addiction Counseling, Marriage and Family Counseling, Telehealth Practices, and Cultural Diversity. Additionally, I am basic trained in Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS). I am also gaining direct clinical experience through practicum and internship prior to graduation.

Other hats I wear or have worn include being a mother, a military spouse living overseas, and a commercial interior designer. Being a part of the military community for over 16 years gave me immense experience in moving, life transitions, and continually changing circumstances. I have also served in women’s and children ministry settings for over 20 years in various capacities. My life experiences and creative background aid and enrich my therapeutic process and shape the counselor I am today.
