Prefessional Counselor Graduate Student Intern - Serving Adults, Couples & Teens

Meet

Connie Kohl

Counseling is a unique and wonderful opportunity for us to pause and reflect in order to better understand ourselves and others and move forward with thoughtfulness and intention. We all go through periods of feeling stuck, overwhelmed, discouraged, or hopeless. Working together in a safe therapeutic space can bring hope, insight, healing, growth, and the ability to realize your priorities and goals. I am impressed at your courage to seek support and would be honored to join you in this process.

MY PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH

I have a holistic view of therapy giving attention to psychological, emotional, relational, spiritual and physical aspects of your life. I find it beneficial to work collaboratively to discover the root of issues at your pace, while also working to minimize and relieve any current negative symptoms. Seeing through an attachment theory lens I take into account the impact of your primary relationships. I have an integrative therapeutic approach which includes emotionally focused, mindfulness, solution-focused, and cognitive behavioral interventions.

I am passionate about the repair and enrichment of all significant relationships as I come alongside adolescents, adults, and couples in individual, family, and couple’s counseling. I believe that at our core we are relational beings who thrive in healthy connection with one another. Yet, we all encounter barriers to connection because of brokenness in the world, within those with whom we are in relationship, and within ourselves. My goal is that our therapeutic relationship will facilitate healing where possible, build skill where needed, and create acceptance of situations outside of our control.

EDUCATION & TRAINING

I am presently working toward my Master of Arts in Counseling at Western Seminary and have gained clinical experience as a practicum student counselor at A New Day Counseling Center in Portland, OR. My coursework and training has included human lifespan and development, crisis and trauma, ethics, marriage and family, human sexuality, multicultural counseling, suicide prevention, and addictions. I have previous experience working with young adults and couples as a certified holistic health coach. I also spent several years working in the natural health field, as well as being on church staff, and volunteering in education and ministry settings.

In addition to my formal training, I come to this profession in the context of having experienced deep childhood loss, being a parent of two teenagers, many years of helping family members and dear friends navigate difficult times of their own, and living out the hard work and joy of marriage for over 20 years. All this has taught me that life is not always easy, but it is never without hope. It is this spark of hope that I will help you find if it is lost, and which together we will kindle into a brighter future.
