I sat on stage as faculty at the graduation ceremony. Eighty-six eager graduate students sat in the seats in front of me with their families—little children, partners, siblings, parents—scattered behind them with signs, flowers, and posters with messages of encouragement…
…These fellow life travelers had pushed through. Pushed ahead. Carried the weight. Finished their degrees.
And the sadness that sank into my heart was that we had asked too much of these graduates.
